Green Drives and Tree planting campaigns
Objective:
Increase forest cover, carbon sinking reservoirs and promote sustainable land management in formerly deforested and degraded areas of Uganda.
Background
Uganda faces severe forest degradation due to deforestation for agriculture, charcoal production, and urbanization. Between 1990 and 2020, forest cover declined from 24% to 9%, accelerating carbon emissions and biodiversity loss.
This threatens Uganda’s water resources, disrupts rainfall patterns, and increases vulnerability to climate change. Without urgent reforestation and sustainable land management, Uganda’s ecosystems and livelihoods remain at significant risk.
As Green Caravan initiative we believe that tree planting plays a very big role in combating climate change thus our campaign entitled “plant your age” encouraging masses to plant a tree every time they celebrate their birthdays to save the environment.
Activities:
- Organize mass tree planting campaigns in rural and urban areas.
- Distribute seedlings to communities for agroforestry and economic use (e.g., fruit trees).
- Establish community-led tree nurseries to provide a consistent source of saplings and employment.
- Promote indigenous trees to maintain biodiversity.
